Is sugaring more painful than hard wax? This is the top question in GOOGLE searches regarding sugaring. The answer is yes and no. Let’s get into the yes first. Hear me and hear me well! If sugaring is done incorrectly, it will hurt worst than anything you have ever done. The application alone will have you squirming on the table and we didn’t even get into the flick. Why no, because sugar paste is warm and in some cases room temperature. So there is no risk of burns ever. Sugar paste does not stick to skin, so during removal you just feel the removal of hair not removal of hair and removal from the skin and lastly hair is removed in the same direction that hair is grown, so that causes less discomfort.

Does sugar waxing hurt the first time?During my first time consultations I always ask (have you ever sugared or hard wax ever before) I ask this because if you recently did any of them the sting wont be as intense, if you did it but long ago mentally you know what it feels like and that’s half the battle so it won’t be as intense and lastly if you have never done anything the sting will be a little intense based on this information. But your second one is 90% less painful or you don’t pay. My 2nd timers always so “oh that wasn’t as bad as the first time!”

What does sugar waxing feel like? It’s warm. It feels like someone is rolling warm honey unto your skin. I know what you are thinking, ewww I will be all sticky! Nope, sugar unlike honey does not stick to the skin, especially when we use powder. That’s why with a quick wrist flick I can flick the paste off leaving no sticky residue. To ensure you don’t leave sticky I wipe my clients afterwards with a warm towel.

Does Sugar waxing hurt more on Pubic hair, Brazilian, or Manzilian? For the majority, yes. The pubic area is a very sensitive area because of the amount of nerves running through that area. For women it’s the top of the labia because the clitoris is there so that skin surrounding the clitoris is sensitive. For men it’s their scrotum and lower shaft skin.
-
What are the disadvantages of sugar waxing?Sugaring is still a form of epilation so if the skin is compromised the sugaring process can lift skin. Because of the force of the flick and possibly holding too tight at the same time a tear can occur.
-
How to make sugaring hurt less?Exfoliate, moisturize, wear loose fitting clothes to appointment, hydrate drinks lots of H2O and maintain a regular sugaring schedule.
-
How to prepare for sugar session? If booking days in advance start to moisturize the area being sugared. Exfoliate the area once before your appointment but never the day of your appointment. Arrive with skin free of makeup, lotions, oils and deodorant if possible, this will create an optimal surface for the sugar to adhere to and give you better results overall. I tell my clients shower, dry off and get dressed. Of course if you are coming from work etc it’s ok because as a licensed professional we have to prep/cleanse the area first before sugaring.
-
Should you trim before sugaring? If you are coming to me, NO. I am skilled to where I can apply paste without dramatically pulling hairs. I fear clients will cut their hair too short, so I prefer you don’t. If you are not coming to me, I advise you trim the hairs to avoid painful pulling and dragging of hairs during the molding process, plus I feel majority of sugarist prefer that you trim.

Will I bleed during or after sugaring? It is possible to bleed during sugaring but never after the session is over. There are various stages of hair growth, one is called Anagen. Hair that is in the Anagen phase is still attached to tiny blood vessels deep within the dermis layer of the hair follicle. When prematurely removed during sugaring the follicle will produce a pin point dot of blood. If several follicles located close together bleed it could look more dramatic than it is. One thing for sure and 2 things for certain you will not bleed out on the treatment table.

How long will my first sugar session last?First time sugar babes usually last 3 - 4 weeks. My first time clients return to me after 4 weeks. Once clients maintain a consistent schedule with proper at home aftercare I can confidently guarantee slower regrowth which means longer stays between sessions, lighter skin and finer/softer hair growth.
-
Are there any restrictions to adhere to after sugaring?Yes! Sugaring removes hair from the hair follicle, so even though you can’t see with the naked eye you now have several damaged empty hair follicles that are susceptible to infection. To avoid infection or what we call Folliculitis which itches and looks like tiny white heads/pimples wait 24 hours before any of the following: going to the gym to avoid getting sweat in the fresh follicles, public beaches and pools, exfoliating and sexual activity and wait 12 hours before taking a shower.

Should I take a pain pill, use numbing cream, or spray before my sugaring appointment?I try to stay as natural as I can meaning I don’t advise my clients to take medication for a 10 - 15 minute session. EXPLAIN THE PILL CONCEPT As for the numbing cream I have had clients use the cream and spray and still say they felt discomfort. Besides it just leaves the area greasy. Sugaring is not like getting hit by a Mack truck. It’s a quick sting and it’s all over. After each session I apply a soothing and cooling aloe mask to further calm the area.
-
Why is the area red after sugaring if the paste does not stick to the skin? When hair is prematurely removed from the hair follicle it causes trauma/safe damage to the hair follicle. It is simply the bodies natural healing reaction which is the process of sending blood to the area where it feels it needs healing. Some clients even have a hive type of reaction to the hair removal. With the soothing and cooling aloe mask I apply after the redness and hives will fade within minutes to a few hours and is nothing to cause alarm.
-
Why do I feel stubble after my sugaring session? There are 2 main reasons. 1 if you were a frequent shaver your first sugaring session may leave you with stubble. Shaving causes hair to grow back unevenly so it’s impossible to get all the hairs removed from the follicle. 2 if you are not moisturizing the area between sessions you can be left with stubble. Lack of moisture leaves the skin dry. If the skin is dry the hair follicle will be dry which may cause the hair to snap and break off short instead of glide out of the follicle.
-
Is it possible to get ingrown after sugaring?Yes, especially if you are sugaring for the first time and coming from hard wax, chemical removers or shaving. Sugaring removes hair in the direction it grows, it may take a session or two for the hair to regrow in its natural direction which causes the hair not to poke back into the skin or become trapped underneath.
-
Why does sugaring hurt less the second time around? There are several reasons. 1 the hair follicle is loose and weak now since it was recently removed 4-6 weeks ago. 2 the regrown hair is finer/thinner. 3 Mentally this is not your first rodeo so your body is more relaxed which allows the endorphins released during discomfort to do its job.
-
Why do we have to avoid sexual activity including oral after sugaring session?I know this is a sore spot for some and it does not help that sugaring or smooth skin works like an aphrodisiac for many men and women. Sugaring removes hair from the follicle. Your follicle is left empty and wounded. Your partners facial hair and or skin could cause an infection inside the hair follicles called Folliculitis. The transfer of sweat and dead skin cells from your partner could enter the empty follicles and cause Folliculitis. Avoiding any form of sexual activity for 24 hours gives the follicles time to heal and close.
-
How should I come dressed for my sugaring appointment? The perfect attire would be a flowing sleeveless dress or a skirt with sleeveless top. This attire allows easy access to armpits and the dress or skirt could be easily pulled up over the hips and under the buttocks. Wear a bra whenever possible this along with clients holding the side of the breast aids in the armpit session.

What is Brazilian wax etiquette and how do I handle certain situations? There should be professional etiquette for the esthetician as well which I explain on my education page but as for clients here are a few etiquette tips. If you know you have an STD or a foul order and discharge do not book an appointment with me but I much rather you book with your gynecologist first. Don’t have unprotected sex within 4 -8 hours of your appointment. The ejaculate discharge during the session makes sugaring very difficult. Ask for a wet wipe if you are unsure if your anal area is clear of feces. Lastly, cleanse the inner labia thoroughly to remove any foul smelling fatty residue buildup deep within the inner labia folds. Leaving this buildup makes sugaring the inner labia difficult. I treat all my clients the same. Everyone gets an aloe mask and warm towels. The towels used on the situations mentioned in this video goes into the trash and not my hamper. I don’t make clients aware of foul odors or fecal residue. I do mention depending on the client the inner labia buildup and how to properly cleanse and avoid such buildup and I would mention if I see any abnormalities on the skin. Like STD lesions, skin tags, unusual moles or suspicious of HS and refer to dermatologist.
-
Can I sugar if I have Hidradenitis Suppurativa?Yes! I have had much success with my HS clients and sugaring. HS does not like hair, so removing it is a great start in avoiding attacks. Sugar paste is 100% natural l, never hot and does not stick to the skin causing it to be more gentle and safer for clients with HS.
-
What should I do immediately after my sugaring session?I tell my clients the day they sugar should be a relaxing day if at all possible. Avoid the sun to keep from sweating. Try to remain cool and comfortable. Wear loose fitting clothes to allow the skin to breathe. Do not exfoliate the area, sugaring is a form of exfoliation so you don’t want to irritate the skin. Avoid public pools and beaches and sexual activity including oral for 24 hours.
